Looking Forward – Past Success and Future Planning
On June 23, Wesley Community Center held its annual meeting to celebrate the accomplishments of the last year and to look forward strategically to the next year. The global economic crisis has caused an increased need for the wide range of support services that Wesley Community Center provides. In 2010, Wesley Community Center served over 21,300 individuals with education programs, case management, emergency financial assistance, food, and other programs that help develop client self-sufficiency. The board and staff have worked diligently to develop a strategic plan that will allow Wesley Community Center to continue meeting the needs of its clients. The plan includes an initiative to establish a charter school to provide pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade education for the children of the Near Northside. In addition, the new Kurtz Education and Recreation Center, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2011, will allow the organization to enhance its services to children, youth, and the community. At the annual meeting, Executive Director Mike Shirl recognized the board members whose terms were expiring and thanked them for their dedication and contributions to Wesley Community Center. These board members included Doug Christians, Brenda Coghlan, Heidi Davis, Stacie Hawkins, Mary Ramos, and Ann Schmitt. Mr. Shirl also welcomed new board members Janie Mitcham and Guray Tulek to the Wesley family. In attendance at the annual meeting were representatives from community partners AVANCE, Avenue CDC, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Neighborhood Centers, Inc., and United Way of Greater Houston; representatives from United Methodist Churches; and board members and staff of Wesley Community Center.
